Managing Your Back Pain

Back PainIf one of your family member or a very close friend is suffering from back pain, then you can appreciate what it means to be pain free.  But for the individual with back pain, it’s probably a very frustrating and demoralizing way of life. At times you might feel okay, and suddenly the change in weather or a little physical activity will shoot excruciating pain in your back. The tips that follow will hopefully provide you with some information to manage your back pain.

Hold Everything When You Get Back Pain

Sometimes we try to suck it up and get through the pain, be it at work or at home. Unfortunately, such actions could further aggravate your back pain, and moreover, slow down the healing process. It’s a good idea to give your aching back a break and rest.  Oops … bad choice of words!  Remember to rest a bit so you don’t put undue stress on your back.

Get Your Back Pain Diagnosed

If you are suffering from chronic back pain, it is not a good idea to go straight to some shop and buy a massaging gizmo.  You should first seek a medical professional specializing in those types of conditions, and get a diagnosis for your chronic back pain.  Once you get a medical diagnosis, then you can seek treatment. Chronic back pain can result from various factors, so you do not want to play doctor and self-diagnose the problem.

Lift Properly To Avoid Back Pain

Lifting objects the proper way can probably save your back for years to come and avoid any back pain or strain.  What you need to do is lift with your legs.  Lower yourself by bending your knees rather then bending your back, make sure to keep your back straight while lifting the object.  Lifting with your legs allows you to be in a power position, and is much more stronger than the back muscles.  And, moreover, it will greatly minimize the strain on your back and avoid future back pain.

Practice Proper Posture To Fight Back Pain

Proper posture not only radiates confidence and self-assurance, but it is also vital for a healthy back.  Using the correct posture while standing, walking or sitting puts less strain on the joints and muscles that are involved in weight-bearing or movement type of activities.  Moreover, it helps keep your spine, bones and joints in alignment, which enhances the proper use of your muscles and reduces excessive wear and tear of the joints.  Bottom line, it will help prevent or minimize back pain.

The American Chiropractic Association website presented the following tips on standing with the proper posture:

  • Keep your knees slightly bent

  • Keep your feet about shoulder-width apart

  • Let your arms hang naturally down the sides of the body

  • Stand straight and tall with your shoulders pulled backward

  • Tuck your stomach in

  • Keep your head level

  • Your earlobes should be in line with your shoulders

  • Do not push your head forward, backward, or to the side
