Am I Ready for Independent Living?

To combat the effects of aging, you want to put into action things that make you feel and stay young and vibrant, both in body and mind. To help keep your body limber and avoid daily bouts of tightness and joint pain, take some time to stretch every day. If your body is flexible, staying mobile and more independent for years to come is not a pipe dream. As we age, it seems easier to ask others for help. And to preserve your sense of independence, see if you can do things for yourself. Such actions will keep you on your toes, give you a sense of pride and purpose, and help you stay strong.

Another item in your action plan as a senior might be deciding to live in an independent living community. If you are able to live independently in your own home and want the advantages of community living, then may be independent living is an option for you in the near future.

To help provide insight on that decision, I am honored to share a guest article written by Hazel Bridges. She is a resident of an independent living community, and having spent a year there, she really enjoys it! If you are struggling with the decision to move into independent living, Hazel can provide information on whether it’s the right move for you.

How You Can Control Your Systemic Inflammation

Results of current medical and scientific research have revealed a link between the “bad” kind of inflammation (aka low-grade, chronic or systemic inflammation) and chronic pain. Dr. Fred Tabung mentioned on an article on the site Harvard Health Publishing (Harvard Medical School) that “chronic pain is the result of chronic inflammation”. Dr. Tabung is a researcher at T.H. Chan School of Public Health at Harvard’s Department of Nutrition. The following article, written by guest author Holli Richardson, explains what systemic inflammation is, how it affects your body, and what you can do to minimize toxicity at the cellular level. She addresses it from a whole body perspective. I thoroughly enjoyed reading her article, as it provided a ton of valuable content. I believe you will also benefit from the information provided in this article.

Natural Ways to Alleviate Lower Back Pain In Young Athletes

On a previous blog post titled Back Pain Education Day 2015: Introduction, it mentioned that “low back pain accounts for about 30% of the adult population (18 years and older) in the U.S.”. That statistic makes sense, being that a significant percentage of those with lower back pain falls in the age range of those who could be involved in athletics. The following article, generously shared by Dr. Brent Wells, provides valuable information for young athletes dealing with lower back pain. He is the founder and a practicing chiropractic doctor of Better Health Chiropractic & Physical Rehab. Without further ado, here’s the article:

Quell Your Pain With Quell

Here’s another device, called Quell, which you may want to research and determine whether it would be a good fit for your pain toolbox. It’s like a TENS unit, but as others have expressed, it’s easier to use without the mess. Quell uses nerve stimulation to block pain signals within your body, which are electrical impluses generated by a small device. This device is inserted in a wrap-around pouch worn on your either your left or right leg. So the neat thing about Quell is that it’s a wearable and portable pain relief gadget. Check out this article from the site The Pain Community, which includes personal reviews from two individuals on their use of Quell.

Can You Get Pain Relief From Copper-Infused Compression?

The third phase of the RICE treatment technique for pain relief includes compression. If a compression pack is applied to the area of pain, it will provide comfort from your pain, can reduce swelling, and allow your body to move a bit more easier. An elastic strap, which you can purchase at any drug store, if wrapped snuggly but not too tightly, can serve as a decent compression pack.

But what about those copper-infused compression products we see on the television? Do they really work? The jury is still out on whether they are effective at providing pain relief. Or is it? Let’s see what Yahoo News has to say about it.
