Get Moving When Back Pain Comes

Exercise When Experience Back PainOn the last blog post, we looked at an article/interview on the Fox News website about “A New Way Of Looking At Back Pain“. Fox News interviewed Dr. Patrick Roth, a neurosurgeon, and the author of the book The End Of Back Pain. As I mentioned previously, it was such a refreshing view of how to treat back pain, considering all the negative press we’ve seen and heard of the effects prescription pain killers, and the increasing incidents of fatalities due to the overdose of such drugs. Dr. Roth stated that when you experience back pain, “the best thing you can do is get moving and don’t be afraid to exercise”. The authority site Spine-Health also supports Dr. Roth’s premise that exercise is good for back pain, however, it takes it one step further and cautions us that the exercises must target your specific condition and pain level. Here’s the article from Spine-Health

New Way Of Looking At Back Pain

I read a recent article/editorial in the local newspaper about how our state is reflecting the statistic from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regarding the sharp increase in deaths connected to the overdose of prescription-drugs (Honolulu Star Advertiser, 6/11/14, Views & Voices). And unfortunately, powerful opioid-based narcotic painkillers such as hydrocodone and oxycodone are examples of prescription-drugs involved in the reported fatalities. I wouldn’t be surprised if a certain percentage of  patients used such drugs to relieve their back pain. According to the newspaper article, prescription-drug misuse by actual patients, abuse by recreational users and the over prescribing  by some doctors, are factors that contribute to this “current public health crisis.” I guess one of the major issue is that our society is so dependent on such powerful opioid-based prescription-drugs to get relief from pain, including back pain. So, is there a solution? Well, I’m sure there’s no quick fix, however, check out this article from the Fox Newswebsite. It contains an interview with Dr. Patrick Roth, a neurosurgeon, and his refreshing view on back pain.

Diaphragmatic Breathing For Pain Relief

On the last blog post, we discussed natural ways to get pain relief. One of the techniques was called diaphragmatic breathing. That breathing  technique involves deep breathing, which results in a more relaxed state and less tension around the area of pain. And moreover, diaphragmatic breathing, also known as belly breathing or optimal breathing, appears to positively affect our immune system.

FDA Requires A Reduction Of Acetaminophen!

Do you have Tylenol readily available in your medicine cabinet? And do you take some when you have a nagging headache or bouts of body aches after going through some physically demanding activity? Well, if so, you’re probably not alone. For temporary use, it will serve its purpose. But prolonged usage could be dangerous. The main ingredient in Tylenol is acetaminophen, but the FDA is not putting the clamps on such over-the-counter (OTC) pain killers. They are targeting prescription pain killers. Spinal Stenosis – UnPlugged!

Okay, sorry for that cheezy title and being MTV-era-ish. In the past blog posts, we looked into Sciatica, and the various conditions which causes it. One of the conditions is called spinal stenosis, in which the spinal canal is narrowed by factors such as old age, heredity or injuries, causing undue pressure on the sciatic nerve. This results in sciatic pain. Previous posts just skimmed the surface of this condition, and today I’d like to go a little deeper into the topic of spinal stenosis. For example, I did not know that there are two types of spinal stenosis, one being more serious than the other. That said, here’s the article from the site Spine-Health that will provide you with a very detail and thorough information on this condition …
