TENS & Pain Relief

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is considered a type of neurostimulation for pain relief. It involves applying a mild electrical current to the skin surface over the area of pain using small electrodes. And before we continue, I wanted to let you know that I am not a medical professional, and this is not medical advice. I came across this information, and wanted to share it with you in hopes that it would be of interest to you.

TENS involves using a small battery-powered device to deliver electrical impulses to the skin surface over the area of pain using small electrodes. The electrical current stimulates the nerves under the skin, which can help to reduce pain by blocking pain signals from reaching the brain.

To use TENS for pain relief, the following steps are typically followed:

  1. Clean the area of skin where the electrodes will be placed.
  2. Apply a small amount of conductive gel to the electrodes to improve the conduction of the electrical impulses.
  3. Attach the electrodes to the skin, ensuring that they are placed on either side of the area of pain.
  4. Turn on the TENS device and adjust the settings to the desired level of intensity and frequency.
  5. Allow the TENS therapy to continue for the prescribed amount of time, typically ranging from 20 minutes to several hours, depending on the individual’s needs and the condition being treated.

During the TENS therapy, the patient may feel a tingling or buzzing sensation at the site of the electrodes. The intensity and frequency of the electrical impulses can be adjusted to provide the most effective pain relief for the individual.

TENS therapy is commonly used to treat various types of pain, including chronic back pain, neck pain, and arthritis. It is considered to be a safe and non-invasive pain management technique and can be used in combination with other pain management treatments, such as medication and physical therapy, to provide comprehensive pain relief.

However, it is important to note that while TENS therapy can be effective for some individuals, it may not work for everyone and should be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Furthermore, TENS therapy is not suitable for individuals who have certain medical conditions like epilepsy or those with a pacemaker. Additionally, caution must be taken while applying TENS therapy, as it should not be used over specific parts of the body such as the chest or the eyes.
