What Does ACKR3 And Conolidine Have To Do With Pain Relief?

ScienceDaily is a treasure trove of goodies when it comes to information on the current trends of pain relief and management.  It can get a bit nerdy with some of the scientific words and jargon, however, it does provide a lot of valuable content.  Did you know that the human body has the capability of generating a natural and safe form of opioids in response to pain?  ACKR3 and conolidine appears to play a significant role in this.

Inflammation, Herbs & Pain Relief

The video interview of Dr. David Sinclair on last week’s article discussed how inflammation, if left unchecked, can accelerate the aging process.  And thus, causing negative health effects and a weaken immune system so that the body cannot effectively manage pain.  Dr. Sinclair had presented anti-inflammatory supplements and actions (e.g., intermittent fasting) to slow down the aging process, and In turn, transform the body into a more optimally healthy state.  The article from the site Medical News Today titled “Which herbs help reduce inflammation?” discusses 3 herbs you can easily find and include in your meals to help fight inflammation.

Inflammation, Pain & Dr. David Sinclair

Last week’s article showcasing Dr. David Sinclair and his research in epigenetics was a revelation.  He had some unconventional and radical ideas regarding longevity.  However, his idea of maintaining a healthy lifestyle makes sense.  In fact, he states that if you follow what he is doing, which was covered last week, it will fight aging.  That in turn, implies its anti-inflammatory benefits.  And it has been established that inflammation within our bodies causes pain.  The article from the site Garden State Pain & Orthopedics, titled How Inflammation Causes Pain, confirms that fact.  I was intrigued with Dr. Sinclair’s research and found another video where he discusses how to reduce inflammation.

Epigenetics & Pain Relief

The article on the site New Hampshire Union Leader, titled Docs: Tune in, turn on and drop out (of the race to the bottom) — requires subscription, showcases content from a popular celebrity doctor, Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen from the world famous Cleveland Clinic.  In a nutshell, the article discusses epigenetics, and according to the CDC, it refers to “… the study of how your behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect the way your genes work”.  If we are careful with our bodies and take care of ourselves as we age, it is possible that we can fortify our bodies and even turn back the aging process.  This in turn may help enhance the ability of our bodies to deal with pain more effectively.

Sleep Position & Pain. Is There A Connection?

Are you a side-line sleeper, or one that loves to sleep on your stomach?  Maybe your favorite position is sleeping on your back.  It appears your sleep position has a connection to pain.  The Cleveland Clinic site has an article that discusses that topic.  The key appears to be allowing the body to be in a neutral position while sleeping.  Check out this YouTube video from ATHLEAN-X.  The video discusses the best and worse sleep positions and how you can leverage that information to avoid painful mornings and days.

OMG, When it Rains it Pours! Fractured Tailbone!

Believe it or not!  My friend who just started his PT sessions for his frozen (right) shoulder just made his situation a bit more challenging.  He was trying to adjust his sitting position at home and slipped off the chair and fell (rear-end first) on the hardwood floor. Ouch!  He said it was so painful that he could not move or breathe for a bit.  Once he was able to get up with the assistance of his wife, he was taken to the same orthopedic clinic who diagnosed his frozen shoulder.  This time they took X-rays on the target area, and it was confirmed he fractured his tailbone.  Ouch!

Frozen Shoulder Treatments

Today’s article is a continuation of last week’s post regarding my friend’s bout with a frozen (right) shoulder.   He went through (i.e., endured) his 1st physical therapy (PT) session last week and will be continuing PT for a two-month period.  It was quite a painful experience he chirped and told me that the physical therapist put him through a series of ordeals (aka exercises) to treat his frozen shoulder.  The therapist’s instructions were to continue the exercises at home, and I did get a copy of the exercises.  I will showcase two of the three exercises, as displayed in a YouTube video from the popular duo Bob and Brad, the funny and very professional and self-proclaimed “Most Famous Physical Therapists on the Internet”.  Please smash the Thumbs-Up button on their video, and I think it will be worth your while to hit the Subscribe button so that you can be alerted when they post new videos.

What Is A Frozen Shoulder?

My friend recently complained of shoulder pain on his right side.  He mentioned that it just sort of happened, and when he tries to move his right arm up or even using it to brush his teeth, it is very painful and at times, unbearable.  And so, he tries not to use his right hand, even though he is right-handed.  He said relying on his left hand more than usual is a challenge and a new learning experience.   I suggested that he seek medical advice before doing anything drastic.  Thank goodness, he did just that and went to an orthopedic clinic.  According to the site MedicalNewsToday, “[o]rthopedics is a branch of medicine that focuses on the care of the musculoskeletal system. This system is made up of muscles and bones, as well as joints, ligaments, and tendons”.  After running a few tests and having an MRI done, the doctor concluded that my friend has a frozen shoulder.
