Squats & Back Pain

If you cannot go to a fitness gym to workout, an ideal way to enhance your overall fitness can happen right in the comfort of your own home or around your neighborhood.  One of the benefits is that you can ensure costs related to fitness will be at a minimum.  You can work out by viewing online videos or take a nice stroll around your neighborhood.  Another thing you can do without dishing out a ton of money is purchasing used workout equipment so that you can exercise at home.

Here is the dilemma.  What if you have back pain?

The ideal situation is to workout on a regular schedule so you can prevent getting back pain.  Exercising on a regular basis can strengthen your core and back muscles.  And that is where you are caught between a rock and a hard place, especially if you are already experiencing back pain.  However, there could be a solution.  Perform squats.  And of course, with necessary adjustments.  Try mini squats.

The squat, according to a New York Times article The Power of the Squat (subscription required), is the “… single best strength-building exercise many of us could be doing right this minute …”.  The article went on to say that squats are a superior form of exercise when it comes to building “… lower-body strength and flexibility …”.  And, moreover, squats are not limited just to the lower body.  It is, according to the article, “… a whole-body exercise …” and requires “… core stability and trains the back”.

So, if you are able to sneak in a routine of squats within your daily life, that will definitely be a plus.  Even with back pain, it may be possible to perform mini squats by following the Tube video above, using a chair to stabilize your balance.  As you build up strength and your back pain starts to ease, you may be able to elevate your game and attempt to workout using other forms of squats.
