What is Myofascial Release?

Manual therapies that involve the fascia for pain relief are often referred to as myofascial release techniques. Last time, we discussed how the fascia was this web-like network within our body, and is a connective tissue that surrounds muscles, bones, and organs in the body. Myofascial release focuses on the restrictions or tightness in the fascia to restore the natural elasticity of the fascia, alleviate pain and improve mobility. As always, I want to mention that I am not a medical professional, and what follows should not be taken as medical advice. I enjoy researching topics on pain relief and pain management, and hope the following information triggers your curiosity to dive deeper on this topic.

Here are a few common manual therapies related to fascial work:

  1. Deep Tissue Massage: While primarily targeting muscles, deep tissue massage can also impact the fascia. Therapists use deep pressure to release tension and fibrous tissue in both muscles and fascia. Fibrous tissue refers to areas of tissue that have become abnormally connected or bound together – simply put, clumped up, knotted.
  2. Rolfing (Structural Integration): Rolfing is a form of bodywork that aims to reorganize the fascial structure for improved posture and overall well-being. It typically involves a series of sessions that address different areas of the body.
  3. Graston Technique: This technique uses specialized instruments to perform soft tissue mobilization. It can be applied to the fascia to break down scar tissue, release fibrous tissue, and improve the functioning of the muscles, joints, and surrounding tissues. This may result in reduced pain, increased range of motion, and enhanced performance in daily activities or specific movements related to the treated area.

The effectiveness of these therapies can vary from person to person, and individual responses may differ. If you are considering such therapies, it is advisable to consult with a qualified healthcare professional or a licensed therapist who specializes in these techniques. They can assess your specific condition and provide personalized recommendations.
